Enka- Japanese triditional style song

I have to thank I had the opportunity to go to the states and experience diversity. What's more fun? Having to see Japaneses people react to diversity. This guy just released a CD here in Japan singing Enka. Enka is like a Japanese version of what people think of country music in the US. Music video is a little off, but he is a really good singer!!!

Isn't Enka mostly sung by foreigners? Maybe not ones that look like this. :-)

Anyway, I didn't believe it was him singing in the video you linked to. But there's another of him on some sort of game show where he sings live. Pretty impressive.

yah!! i know exactly what you are saying.

i was checking him on youtube, and in one of TV shows, everybody was amazed by him and getting excited. they were keep saying "this foreigner, blah blah, released an Enka CD!! he's an American, but can sing Enka really well!!"

i couldn't understand... well, of course we can, but i was still surprised that people found that much big deal out of it.

i was like.. this is just one dude, a Japanese American, happened to be interested in and good at Enka.

i get surprised some time to time, but i love to see Japan still being Japan!

why are people making such a big deal out of it? there's no difference between him and japanese hip-hop/rap or jazz artists or any other non-north american artists doing non-japanese styles of music. when we see foreigners here in north america performing american styles of music we don't throw our arms up and run around like chickens with heads cut off.

Grace, I know what you mean. But you have to understand that for Japanese people this is a big deal.
We are no really accepting in ideas that involves other culture as part of Japan. For me what i really want Japanese people to understand is that people aren't so different. Japanese tends to put a straight line between us and others. So because he speaks Japaneses and sings Japanese songs while being black, I hope this experience will change something with in Japanese people what it means to be more accepting to changes and other ideas.
